Grooving Parameter Assistant

Calculate grooving RPM, feed, depth limits, and chip-breaking recommendations. Grooving involves interrupted cut and high chip load — correct parameters are critical for insert life and part quality.

Grooving fundamentals

RPM = 1000 × Vc ÷ (π × D) — use the workpiece diameter at the cutting point.

Feed rate = f × RPM — grooving feeds are typically 0.05–0.15 mm/rev, much lower than turning because the chip is constrained in the groove.

Groove depth limits: for external grooving, depth should not exceed 1.5× the insert width for stable tool life. Deeper grooves require multiple passes (plunge, retract, shift, plunge again).

Chip control is everything. Grooving produces a wide, thin chip that tends to pack in the groove. Use peck cycles (Q) to retract and break the chip. For stainless and titanium, use 0.5–1 mm pecks.
