Setup Clearance Check

Check tool holder, collet, and spindle clearance against fixture and part geometry. Crashes usually happen at setup — catch them before you cycle the machine.

How to check clearance

Total reach = holder overhang + tool protrusion. This is how far the tool assembly extends below the spindle nose.

Required clearance: when the tool moves to a position near the fixture or jaw, the holder flange must clear the tallest obstruction by at least 3–5 mm. If the tool reaches past the work offset and the holder flange is near the fixture, you risk crashing the holder into the part or vise.

Best practice: after setting up, manually jog the spindle to the highest point of the travel with dry run (single block). Watch the holder clear the vise and clamps at every position. Use tool length offset verification.
