Spindles & Guideways
Every machine has the same core components. Understanding them helps you compare machines, diagnose problems, and know where accuracy comes from.
Spindle Systems
| Drive type | Speed range | Torque | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear-driven | Low RPM, high torque | Very high | Heavy cutting, big lathes |
| Belt-driven | Mid range (0–15k RPM) | Good | General milling, turning |
| Direct-drive | High RPM (12–24k) | Mid | Molds, aluminum |
| Motorized / built-in | Very high (20–40k+) | Low | High-speed small tools |
Guideways
| Box Ways | Linear Guideways | |
|---|---|---|
| Damping / rigidity | Excellent | Moderate |
| Speed | Slower | Fast |
| Wear life | Decades, re-scrapable | Cartridge replacement |
| Best for | Heavy steel, cast iron | Light fast cuts, aluminum |
Other Key Components
| Part | Function |
|---|---|
| Ballscrews | Convert rotary motor motion to linear axis motion. Preloaded to eliminate backlash. |
| Linear scales (encoders) | Direct position feedback on the axis. Without them, the controller estimates position from motor rotation (less accurate). |
| Servo motors | Drive each axis; closed-loop feedback on position and torque. |
| Coolant / chip systems | High-pressure coolant breaks chips; chip conveyors remove them. |
Linear scales = direct feedback. A machine without them is "semi-closed loop" — position is estimated from motor rotation, not directly measured. On a budget VMC this is fine; on a precision machine, glass scales are a must.
